In memory of Steve Jobs – truly a visionary….

There aren’t many people who have such a powerful and consistent influence on peoples lives, but Steve jobs really is one of those people. His Vision and confidence to make changes and pursue a better way – to ‘think different’ has consistently provided the world with some of the most game changing products, a joy to use and totally transformative in the industries that used them. From Pixar to Disney, from the Mac to the iPad, Steve’s influence on our lives can not be underestimated.. and it was all good! I can’t remember a Keynote speech from Jobs where you wouldn’t go away thinking ‘thats is so cool’ !

“… the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Steve was an inspirational guy and will enter the halls of greatness with the legacy he leaves behind…

Ever had a full colour brochure or document that you need to convert to black and white, but still maintain print quality, and not have to update every image asset? With this helpful tip I will show you how!

I came a cross a problem today when the Ad I was designing needed to be in black and white – but the assets I was designing with were all in CMYK colour. I didn’t really want to convert all my images to B/W so after digging around in Adobe InDesign and Acrobat 8 Pro (and with a little help from the web of course!) I found this solution:

InDesign doesn’t allow you to simply export to a greyscale file, so the process is simply to export the file as normal – as a ‘press ready PDF’ – and then open it in Acrobat 8. Select Print Production from the ‘Advanced’ Menu and then select ‘Convert colours’.

Within this dialog window you can select the document colors you’d like to convert (CMYK, RGB, etc…) and change the action underneath to ‘CONVERT’ (it should be set to this by default). Under this in ‘Destination Space’, select a profile – I used ‘Gray Gamma 2.2′. This converts the open pdf file, just save it and your artwork is now in glorious greyscale!

I have finally figured a way to add a ‘proper’ html signature in apple mail that will allow you to present graphics and styling without showing images etc as attachments ( a habit I find particularly annoying!)

Here is the process:

1) Add a signature by going to the ‘Mail’ menu and then ‘Preferences’ click on ‘Signatures’ then create a new signature. Remember to add the signature to the appropriate mail account). You can simply add some temporary text to act as a placeholder – so you can recognize it easily.

2)Go to your ‘user’ > Library > Mail folder and open the ‘Signatures’ folder view by date and find the signature file with the date of ‘today’ ( the file names are system created, unique identifiers – not very helpful to us) make a note of the file name…

3) Open your html file with your signature code in safari and then save as a web archive into the same folder above (> Library > Mail folder > Signatures ) with the same file name – overwriting the existing signature.

4) Restart mail and then test it by creating a new mail with that signature!

There you have it – no more annoying image attachments that keep acculmulating when you send mail back and forth!

Trapster is an open source speed camera database which now has an iphone app do give you alerts as you travel! it combines technologies such as GPS and wireless location, voice transcription, geocoding, reverse geocoding, and SMS, with a central database server. It communicates in real time, using the Internet providing data based on users reports of locations. The service is free!

Does this pose an ethical question on trying to avoid speed cameras? – no in the least – the Police are continually saying that cameras are there as a prevention – and as such even if they didn’t get anyone – if they got them to slow down then they have fulfilled their purpose… Trapster simply assists in reminding drivers to slow down – enhancing the effectiveness of the cameras..

I have been looked around for the best GA 'client' for the iPhone and the best so far in my experience ( and I tried them all!) is moba app's Analytics Agent Pro.

I have been looked around for the best GA ‘client’ for the iPhone and the best so far in my experience ( and I tried them all!) is moba app’s Analytics Agent Pro.

The app itelf is pretty easy to use – it really just presents the information from GA – you can’t change settings – although I don’t think this is an issue – you can drill down into the stats which is pretty much all you would want to do remotely in my view.

The only thing which is a bit of a pain is the default view is set to 30 days and you can’t adjust this – so if you want to select a date range as a default view you are out of luck – maybe that is something that can be added later.

It is generally the best app for this kind of thing – it looks great- cool interface and graphs and it logs you in automatically which is a big bonus for me!

If you set up you sites in the same account or add them to a client dashboard then you can view all you site in the same login, Analytics Agent Pro allows you to select the site in the first screen.
